An Abenaki Legend ~ The Creation Story

Creation Story & The Importance Of Dreaming
An Abenaki Legend

The Great Spirit, in a time not known to us looked about and saw nothing. No colors, no beauty. Time was silent in darkness. There was no sound. Nothing could be seen or felt. The Great Spirit decided to fill this space with light and life.

From his great power he commanded the sparks of creation. He ordered Tôlba, the Great Turtle to come from the waters and become the land. The Great Spirit molded the mountains and the valleys on turtle’s back. He put white clouds into the blue skies. He was very happy. He said, “Everything is ready now. I will fill this place with the happy movement of life.”He thought and thought about what kind of creatures he would make.

Where would they live? What would they do? What would their purpose be? He wanted a perfect plan. He thought so hard that he became very tired and fell asleep.

His sleep was filled with dreams of his creation. He saw strange things in his dream. He saw animals crawling on four legs, some on two. Some creatures flew with wings, some swam with fins. There were plants of all colors, covering the ground everywhere. Insects buzzed around, dogs barked, birds sang, and human beings called to each other. Everything seemed out of place. The Great Spirit thought he was having a bad dream. He thought, nothing could be this imperfect.

When the Great Spirit awakened, he saw a beaver nibbling on a branch. He realized the world of his dream became his creation. Everything he dreamed about came true. When he saw the beaver make his home, and a dam to provide a pond for his family to swim in, he then knew every thing has it’s place, and purpose in the time to come.

It has been told among our people from generation to generation. We must not question our dreams. They are our creation.

Abenaki Emergence Myth

First Manitou, the Great Spirit, made Kloskurbeh, the great teacher. One day when the sun was directly overhead, a young boy appeared to Kloskurbeh. He explained that he had been born when the sea had churned up a great foam, which was then heated by the sun, congealed, and came alive as a human boy.The next day, again at noon, the teacher and the boy greeted a girl. She explained that she had come from the earth, which had produced a green plant which bore her as fruit. And so Kloskurbeh, the wise teacher, knew that human beings came forth from the union of sea and land. The teacher gave thanks to Manitou and instructed the boy and girl in everything they needed to know. Then Kloskurbeh went north into the forest to meditate.

The man and the woman had many, many children. Unfortunately, they had so many children that they were unable to feed them all by hunting and picking wild foods. The mother was filled with grief to see her children hungry, and the father despaired. One day the mother went down to a stream, entering it sadly. As she reached the middle of the stream, her mood changed completely and she was filled with joy. A long green shoot had come out of her body, between her legs. As the mother left the stream, she once again looked unhappy.

Later, the father asked her what had happened during the day while he was out trying to gather food. The mother told the whole story. She then instructed the father to kill her and plant her bones in two piles. The father, understandably, was upset by this command and he questioned the mother many times about it. Naturally, it was shocking and disturbing to think that he had to kill his wife in order to save his children: But she was insistent. The father immediately went to Kloskurbeh for advice. Kloskurbeh thought the story very strange, but then he prayed to Manitou for guidance. Kloskurbeh then told the father that the mother was right; this was the will of Manitou. So, the father killed his wife and buried her bones in two piles as he was commanded to do.

For seven moons, the father stood over the piles of bones and wept. Then one morning, he noticed that from one pile had sprouted tobacco and, from the other, maize. Kloskurbeh explained to the man that his wife had really never died, but that she would live forever in these two crops.

To this day, a mother would rather die than see her children starve, and all children are still fed today by that original mother. Men like to plant in the cornfields extra fish they catch as a gift of thanks to the first mother and a remembrance that we are all children of the union of sea and land.

Two Wolves – A Cherokee Parable

Two Wolves – A Cherokee Parable

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

“One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”

The old chief simply replied,
“The one you feed.”

Native American Flute Music: Meditation Music for Shamanic Astral Projection, Healing Music

Native American Flute Music: Meditation Music for Shamanic Astral Projection, Healing Music Shamanism is a system for psychic, emotional, and spiritual healing and for exploration, discovery, and knowledge gathering about non-material worlds and states of mind. Shamanism is a “technique of ecstasy” in which the spirit of the shaman leaves the body and travels to communicate with spirit helpers and other beings for the purpose of obtaining knowledge, power, or healing. Shamanic Astral Projection or Shamanic Journeying is an altered state of consciousness wherein you enter a realm called non-ordinary reality. By journeying you can gather knowledge and perform healing in ways that are not accessible in ordinary waking reality. How does shamanism work? Some people think that in shamanic healing journeying, the spirit leaves the body and a person is being healed by spirit helpers. Others think that shamanic journeying allows access to one’s own intuition, which may otherwise be drowned out by the prattle of everyday thinking or by anxiety; and that it is a way of engaging a person’s subconscious desires for healing. Shamanic healing may not cure physical or psychological illness, but it may help one gain psychic energy that will allow one better to handle illness. Shamanic healing therefore is best used in conjunction with other treatments, not as a substitute for them. Connection with a Power Animal A power animal protects you physically and provides you with emotional support, wisdom, and vital energy. Some people think a power animal is a spirit being that stays with you because it cares for you and enjoys being able to experience life in a physical body. Others think a power animal is a symbol for one’s subconscious wisdom. Almost everybody has a power animal; some have several. (Perhaps you had an “invisible animal friend” as a child or have always been fascinated with a particular kind of animal. This animal may be your Power Animal). A person may, in the course of life, lose contact with the power animal, thereby losing the animal’s protection, wisdom, and energy. If you lose contact with your Power Animal, you may feel dispirited, or you may become sick easily. The Shamanic Astral Projection technique of Power Animal Retrieval can restore a person’s connection to a Power Animal. A person can also journey to find his or her own Power Animal. To maintain a connection with your Power Animal, take the time to learn about your animal, learn to feel its presence, communicate with it, and honor it by doing things that it enjoys. Free flow of emotional and physical energy Health requires a free flow of energy that one can use to accomplish one’s desires in the world. But one’s energy can become blocked in various ways. People who have lost parts of their life essence, who have been ill, who have lost connection with a Power Animal, or who are regularly exposed to emotionally stressful situations are vulnerable to intrusions or “psychic infections” that block a person’s connection with self or drain a person’s energy. An intrusion can be thought of either as a foreign energy being that takes up residence in a person’s psychic body (a psychic infection), or as a psychic structure (an emotional wall or barrier) that a person built to keep herself safe from harm, but that now is blocking some of his/her energy expression. A person with an intrusion might feel drained or ill, might have aches and pains, might have nightmares or other fears. A shamanic healer can find and remove intrusions and barriers in a healing ritual called extraction. A sense of purpose A sense of purpose is necessary to happiness. The person who loves and cares about the world and fellow beings, who wants to make some small part of the universe a better place, has a sense of purpose. A person can find a sense of purpose in life by seeking knowledge and direction through shamanic journeys, divinations, and rituals. One can do this alone, or with a group of people engaged in similar quests. A shamanic healer or counselor can’t find another person’s purpose, but can help one seek and interpret information.

Message from Chief Arvol Looking Horse.

(Question from Blue Feather Spirit – Is this message more important Now, than it was 14  years ago?)

Mitakuye (my relative),

I, Chief Arvol Looking Horse, of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Nation, ask you  to understand an Indigenous perspective on what has happened in America, what we  call “Turtle Island.” My words seek to unite the global community through a  message from our sacred ceremonies to unite spiritually, each in our own ways of  beliefs in the Creator.

We have been warned from Ancient Prophecies of these times we live in  today,  but have also been given a very important message about a solution to  turn  these terrible times around.

To understand the depth of this message you must recognize the importance of  Sacred Sites and realize the interconnectedness of what is happening today, in  reflection of the continued massacres that are occurring on other lands and our  own Americas.

I have been learning about these important issues since the age of 12, upon  receiving the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle and its teachings. Our  people have striven to protect Sacred Sites from the beginning of time. These  places have been violated for centuries and have brought us to the predicament  that we are in at the global level.

Look around you. Our Mother Earth is very ill from these violations, and we are  on the brink of destroying the possibility of a healthy and nurturing survival  for generations to come, our children’s children.

Our ancestors have been trying to protect our Sacred Site called the Sacred  Black Hills in South Dakota, “Heart of Everything That Is,” from continued  violations. Our ancestors never saw a satellite view of this site, but now that  those pictures are available, we see that it is in the shape of a heart and,  when fast-forwarded, it looks like a heart pumping.

The Dine have been protecting Big Mountain, calling it the liver, and we  are  suffering and going to suffer more from the extraction of the coal from there  and the poison processes used in doing so.

The Aborigines have warned of the contaminating effects of global warming  on  the Coral Reefs, which they see as Mother Earth’s blood purifier.

The Indigenous people of the rainforest relay that the rainforest are the lungs  of the planet and need protection.

The Gwich’in Nation has had to face oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife  Refuge coastal plain, also known to the Gwich’in as “Where life  begins!”

The coastal plain is the birthplace of many life forms of the Animal Nations.  The death of these Animal Nations will destroy Indigenous Nations in  this  territory.

As these destructive developments continue all over the world, we will witness  many more extinct Animal, Plant, and Human Nations, because of mankind’s misuse  of power and their lack of understanding of the “balance of life.”

The Indigenous people warn that these destructive developments will cause havoc  globally. There are many, many more Indigenous awareness and knowledge about  Mother Earth’s Sacred Sites, her Chakras, connections to our spirit that  will  surely affect our future generations.

There needs to be a fast move toward other forms of energy that are safe  for  all Nations upon Mother Earth. We need to understand the types of minds that are  continuing to destroy the spirit of our whole global community. Unless we do   this, the powers of destruction will overwhelm us. Our Ancestors foretold that   water would someday be for sale. Back then, this was hard to believe, since the   water was so plentiful, so pure, and so full of energy, nutrition, and spirit.

Today we have to buy pure water, and even then the nutritional minerals have  been taken out; it’s just empty liquid. Someday water will be like gold,  too  expensive to afford.

Not everyone will have the right to drink safe water. We fail to appreciate and  honor our Sacred Sites, ripping out the minerals and gifts that lay underneath  them as if Mother Earth were simply a resource, instead of the Source of Life  itself.

Attacking Nations and having to utilize more resources to carry out destruction  in the name of peace is not the answer! We need to understand how  all these  decisions affect the Global Nation; we will not be immune to its repercussions.  Allowing continual contamination of our food and land is  affecting the way we  think.

A “disease of the mind” has set in world leaders and many members of our global  community, with their belief that a solution of retaliation and destruction of  peoples will bring Peace.

In our Prophecies it is told that we are now at the crossroads: Either  unite  spiritually as a Global Nation, or be faced with chaos, disasters,  diseases,  and tears from our relatives’ eyes.

We are the only species that is destroying the Source of Life, meaning Mother  Earth, in the name of power, mineral resources, and ownership of land, using  chemicals and methods of warfare that are doing irreversible damage, as Mother  Earth is becoming tired and cannot sustain any more impacts of war.

I ask you to join me on this endeavor. Our vision is for the Peoples of all  continents, regardless of their beliefs in the Creator, to come together as one   at their Sacred Sites to pray and meditate and commune with one another, thus   promoting an energy shift to heal our Mother Earth and achieve a universal  consciousness toward attaining Peace.

As each day passes, I ask all Nations to begin a global effort, and  remember to  give thanks for the Sacred Food that has been gifted to us by our  Mother Earth,  so the nutritional energy of medicine can be guided to heal our  minds and  spirits.

This new millennium will usher in an age of harmony or it will bring the  end of  life as we know it. Starvation, war, and toxic waste have been the hallmark of  the Great Myth of Progress and Development that ruled the last millennium.

To us, as caretakers of the heart of Mother Earth, falls the responsibility of  turning back the powers of destruction.  You yourself are the one who must  decide.

You alone – and only you – can make this crucial choice, to walk in honor  or to  dishonor your relatives. On your decision depends the fate of the entire World.

Each of us is put here in this time and this place to personally decide the  future of humankind.

Did you think the Creator would create unnecessary people in a time of such  terrible danger?

Know that you yourself are essential to this World. Believe that!  Understand  both the blessing and the burden of that. You yourself are  desperately needed  to save the soul of this World. Did you think you were put  here for something  less? In a Sacred Hoop of Life, there is no beginning and no  ending!

Given the evidence, why do so many humans live in denial? I have a hypothesis I’d like to share. First, though, a definition: A hypothesis, from the scientific perspective I’ll use here, is a candidate explanation. The pattern in this case is denial of abundant evidence. My hypothesis is a potential explanation for the pattern.

At some level, DENIAL IS UNDOUBTEDLY LOCKED INTO OUR DNA.  I suspect that only by denying death was the first person able to exit the cave, traverse the raging river, cross the daunting mountain range, and generally expand the range of the tribe.

Does the pattern of denying evidence extend to knowledge that threatens the psyche as well as the body? How could it not?

Native Americans were using psychoactive plants 1,000 years ago

While there is well-documented evidence of cultures using psychoactive plants for spiritual and medicinal use throughout human history, pinpointing the exact origin of ritualistic psychotropic plant use is tricky.

But recent excavations of a human burial site in the dry Sora River valley in southwestern Bolivia have unearthed a ritual bundle of psychotropic plants providing clear evidence that Native Americans in the area used multiple plants, perhaps in different combinations, to induce hallucinations as early as 1,000 years ago.

Researchers from Penn State discovered the human burial site and ritual bundle while looking for evidence of ancient occupation of the region.

“We already knew that psychotropics were important in the spiritual and religious activities of the societies of the south-central Andes, but we did not know that these people were using so many different compounds and possibly combining them together,” said Jose Capriles, an assistant professor of anthropology at Penn State. “This is the largest number of psychoactive substances ever found in a single archaeological assemblage from South America.”

The bundle contained two snuffing tablets, a snuffing tube, and a pouch made from fox snouts. The snuffing tablets would have been used to grind psychotropic plants into snuff which then would have been smoked with the snuffing tube.

Radiocarbon dating revealed that the bundle is around 1,000 years old.

The researchers carefully collected tiny scrapings from the fox-skin pouch and used liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry to analyze its contents.

“This method is highly sensitive and very effective for detecting the presence of minute amounts of specific compounds from very small samples,” said Melanie Miller, the researcher responsible for analyzed the samples.

The pouch once contained multiple psychoactive plants as the analysis identified many different psychoactive compounds including cocaine, harmine, dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and possibly psilocin (the main hallucinogenic compound in magic mushrooms).

The presence of both DMT and harmine suggests that the owner of the pouch used the ingredients to make ayahuasca.

“Some scholars believe that ayahuasca has relatively recent origins, while others argue that it may have been used for centuries, or even millennia,” said Capriles. “Given the presence of harmine and DMT together in the pouch we found, it is likely that this shaman ingested these simultaneously to achieve a hallucinogenic state. This finding suggests that ayahuasca may have been used up to 1,000 years ago.”

It is possible that the pouch and burial site where it was found belonged to a shaman, but the discovery only produces more questions than answers as many of the plant compounds discovered in the pouch were not native to the nearby region.

“The presence of these compounds indicates the owner of this kit had access to at least three plants with psychoactive compounds, but potentially even four or five,” said Miller. “None of the psychoactive compounds we found come from plants that grow in this area of the Andes, indicating either the presence of elaborate exchange networks or the movement of this individual across diverse environments to procure these special plants.”

The recent findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Ecuador Amazon tribe win first victory against oil companies

Ecuador’s Waorani indigenous tribe won their first victory Friday against big oil companies in a ruling that blocks the companies’ entry onto ancestral Amazonian lands for oil exploration activities.

After two weeks of deliberations, a criminal in Puyo, central Ecuador, accepted a Waorani bid for court protection in Pastaza province to stop an oil bidding process after the government moved to open up around 180,000 hectares for exploration.

The lands are protected under Ecuador’s constitution that establishes the “inalienable, unseizable and indivisible” rights of indigenous people “to maintain possession of their ancestral lands and obtain their free adjudication.”

Crucially, however, the wealth in the subsoil is owned by the state.

The constitution also enshrines the need for prior on any plans to exploit the underground resources, given the probable environmental and cultural impacts on tribal communities.

The state reached an agreement with the Waorani over oil in 2012, but the tribe’s leaders say they were duped.

The judges ordered the government to conduct a new consultation, applying standards set by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, based in San Jose.

The ruling “has created a significant precedent for the Amazon,” said Lina Maria Espinosa, attorney for the plaintiffs, outside court.

“It has been demonstrated that there was no consultation and that the state violated the rights of this people, and therefore of other peoples.”

The Waorani, who number around 4,800, also inhabit other Amazonian provinces.

May The Sun Rise One Day On A Vegan Planet

A Spiritual And Inspirational Poem That Touches The Heart And Soul And Provokes The Mind —from

I will never see the sun rise. I will never see it set.I will never feel a kind touch. I will never be a pet. I will never feel loved or be loved, as I’m led to my murder, being prodded, poked and shoved.

As they cut my tender skin,I wondered if anyone cared. If anybody out there would consider my despair. For you did not see me die, and you did not see me bleed. You did not hear me cry before you ate the meat that you don’t need.

You did not watch them kill me. You could not feel my pain. You will try not to think of me, as you blindly eat again.I was the cow you ate on Monday. The pig you had the midweek. I was the turkey you ate for Christmas.

I was the calf you had to eat. I was the chicken in your sandwich, and the duck you had with tea.I felt pain beyond belief, but you never thought of me. Because thinking can be painful, and you refuse to see, that for every time you eat meat, those animals must bleed.

The cow was killed for Monday. The pig was butchered too. The turkey lived for 16 weeks, and the baby calf had died for you. The chicken lived inside a cage. The duck could hardly move. All this needless suffering occurred for so called food.

I fail to see a reason, as there is no need. When humans eat my meat, it is purely for their greed. You may think you’re above me. That you have the advantage. But a kind, innocent creature, is better than a SAVAGE!!

So next time you’re out shopping, try to feel some guilt. For the animals that have died, for your eggs, your meat and milk.

My heroes are those people, who will not bite into me. So I ask a simple favor. Please stop eating meat.I’m asking for the cows, the pigs and all the sheep.

Who are much more important than just some cruel unhealthy treat. They can’t speak themselves, so please let’s be their voice. Every animal born into this, for them there was no choice. For you did not see me die, and you did not see me bleed. You did not hear me cry, for the meat that you don’t need!
